On The River

This large remodel of an outdated kitchen truly was a combination of interesting challenges! A short but very specific client wish list to work within, the typical “surprises” found in a remodel when the walls are opened up and the ensuing plan changes, and pulling together colors with very different parts and pieces were just some of the fun in this project. But the end result? Just what we want: deliriously happy homeowners.

Coffee

Serious coffee drinkers need a serious coffee bar. Here a morning cup of jo can be grabbed overlooking the previously existing opening into the dining room. The granite ledge protects the bottom of the opening and the sink provides extra entertaining options.

Stove Wall

The homeowners live on the Mississippi and thought something resembling river rock would be a fun alternative to a traditional tile wall splash. Using it on the entire wall makes a bold river statement! The copper hood was a 10-year homeowner dream that finally became reality. The large drawers in base cabinets are great storage and nothing new, but offsetting them brings a nice furniture look to “regular” cabinetry. And a refrigerator cabinet should always cover the entire fridge, and has great deep storage above.

Lighting

The lights and cabinet hardware are an oil-rubbed bronze finish; warm undertones help pull in the copper hood color. The lights were fun to select – all have similar lines that coordinate with the mouldings in the kitchen. The lights over the dining room table needed to be mounted to a beam and are adjustable to make sure the light washes over the table and dinner guests aren’t left in the dark (see photo in gallery below).

Table

The booth table top was custom designed in maple and alder. The rest of the kitchen is done in knotty alder, but since kids would be using the table and alder is not a hardwood, the larger sections were done in maple with alder inlays for better durability.

Accessories!

The cutting board needed to be heavy-duty enough for a meat grinder being attached and has nice, clean, undermount guides so food doesn’t get caught and cause a clean-up headache.

Always plan for not only trash, but recycling as well.

Pullouts

The large island was designed with extra-deep spaces, so we put in extra-deep pullouts – the full-extension drawer guides make for fabulous storage!

Desk

This workspace has it all – file drawers to the left of the desk, custom pullouts for the printer and the shredder, and a solid tambour rolltop to hide the possible mid-project mess. We opted for the large oil-rubbed bronze pulley lamp instead of a ceiling fixture for a more cozy office feel.
